Shifting Perspectives
One of my favorite courses in graduate school was on interdisciplinary thinking.
Interdisciplinary thinking involves taking totally opposite disciplines, and try to combine them together to find overlap. It allows you to create new perspectives, solutions, or understandings of complex problems that cannot be fully addressed by a single discipline.
It takes an unsolvable puzzle, and gives you a new piece to lay down on the table.
Have you ever felt stuck?
Maybe you are doing the same thing over and over. Falling into the same patterns.
Or you are looking for a way out, and cannot find a way forward?
This is where interdisciplinary thinking can really help. Let’s say you are having difficulties with your manager at work. You’ve tried to think of a way to solve it, and no matter what you try, the siutation is not getting any better.
The first step is to acknowledge that you are stuck in your own current perspective of the situation. This acknowledgement, will help you work to shift your perspective, and to look at the relationship with your boss in new, and possibly even ridiculous ways.
By triggering the right side of your brain, these shifts can help you identify new pathways you’ve never encountered.
In example, what if you thought about your boss like you would bake a cake. Or, like your favorite holiday of the year. Or your favorite hobby.
It seems silly, but I’ve seen it in action over and over again. I’ve seen people go, “ah ha! I’ve unlocked something here! Instead of trying to go at my boss directly, I’m going to take the relationship in a new direction, by separating my relationship with the individual, with my work, similar to how you separate the wet and dry ingredients.”
Interdisciplinary thinking is something that you can absolutely do on your own. If you are looking to speed up the process, then it’s time to hire a coach.
Working with a coach, opens new doors, new possibilities, and new ways to take action towards solving your complex problem.
